CELEBRATING THE BODY IN GAYA FUSION ART SPACE

'Celebrating The Body' lifts body as a foundation framework for visual narrative assembled by artists of Fighting Cocks Group. Why does the body? Body as philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty called as etre-au-monde. Body is a human's mode to exists in this universe. It is an important aspect for humans, either biologically, because the body supporting human life, as well as philosophically, namely as a medium to touch the world and realize itself. Through their body, human reveals the existence of man himself, because by his body he was known as a subject. By his body, man passes the test of history stored neatly in the sensory organs of his body.
TOWARDS the close of 2011 Fighting Cocks Group Yogyakarta has two exhibition programs in two strategic places at once namely Philo Art Space (Jakarta) and Gaya Fusion Art Space (Bali). This agenda is apart from personal agendas of the artists members after previously Zam Kamil and Moch Basori enliven exhibition of Spirit '90 Group in Griya Santrian Gallery (Bali) while Nurul 'Acil' Hayat joined to Sanggar Suwung Yogyakarta for exhibiting in Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta and previously collaborated with Indonesia and Austria artists in Sewon Art Space (Yogyakarta).

Collective exhibition in Philo Art Space, titled 'Tubuh-tubuh Margin' took place in September 26 to October 10, 2011. The exhibition with the curator Tommy F. Awuy displays about 21 recent works of artists of Fighting Cocks Group. At the same time, exhibition titled 'Celebrating The Body' in Gaya Fusion Art Space was held on the October 2 to November 2, 2011.

One of the interesting matter is in any event organized by the Fighting Cocks Group (excluding event of solo exhibitions and other independent) always involves other artists. Please to look at Philo Art Space exhibition, Fighting Cocks Group took Priyaris Munandar and Iqrar Dinata. While I Made Wiradana and Ida Bagus Purwa join the exhibition at Gaya Fusion Art Space. Indeed, this group is fully aware to use any existing event as a vehicle in order to expand the network to fellow artists and other institutions of art stakeholders. In fact, it is also possible to invite other institutions outside the scope of fine art in the context of events that are not just 'show off' the works of fine arts but also the process to create the artworks itself (workshop).

Then each artist composed the discourse of the body according to their point of view. Multazam 'Zam' Kamil interprets the body as a vehicle for ideas relations among human. He raised visual of body silhouette that blends with humans daily poetic moments. For Zam Kamil, ideas relations among human are very likely to occur in any situation and will ‘find each other' as a manifestation of natural law. It is even manifest in a tumultuous and difference situation. Just look at his work, titled 'Pieta Merah Putih' (Red White Pieta) with visual of silhouettes of two figures in red and white where the red silhouette appears to support (embraces) a white silhouette of a nearly collapsed. Apparently Zam Kamil understands it is needs to an extraordinary 'courage' (with the symbols of red silhouette) to support and oversee a great idea, whatever the shape and scope.

The body fabricated as an individual with all its possibilities presented by Moch Basori in his work titled 'Acrobat'. It is inversely proportional to Nurul 'Acil' Hayat that actually held up a group of masculine bodies with his face without expression, naked, colorful balded-head. Swarm of the bodies were always in the pursuit poses, jump, grabbed or reached 'something' as a visual narrative of human desires that always wanted to compete. Simply consider the work of Acil titled 'Redirection' and 'The Hunters'. These two works of Acil seem to get more attention to the expatriates and foreign tourists who visit. "There are other artists who use newsprints medium, but less detail as Acil," explained Desak Rai Darmayanti, manager of the Gaya Fusion Art Space. "I like these art works," said Beatriz Mousinho in different occasions.

In line with Acil, naked figures are also presented expressively by Ida Bagus Purwa and I Made Wiradana but with a skeptical viewpoint. Ida Bagus Purwa in his work titled 'Silent' presented the body of a grown man sitting slumped helplessly. Perhaps life causes the body must bear the 'burden'. Wiradana more explicit in describing the bodies with this burden. Two of his works titled 'The Body #1' and 'The Body #2' presented the figures of male bodies wear a loincloth. His face blood-red colored bear suffering, while his hands spread wide like being crucified.

E. Jane Fuller, executive producer of largest annual literary event in Bali, it her opening words conveyed an expression of pride on the collaboration of two different events, but complement each other so it is worthy to be celebrated together as a cultural event for public arts in Bali and surrounds. So, let's Celebrate the Body!
