FOR THE LAST 30 years, Yogyakarta has produced thousands of artists. This number is increasing every year. Art spaces also appear to facilitate the city's art desires. Starting from non-profit galleries, commercial galleries, museums, art libraries as well as public spaces are developing with their own role and characters. With in the same spirit, Austro Indonesian Arts Program (AIAP) through Sewon ArtSpace wants to get involved in the dynamics of Yogyakarta art by opening a space for work, as well as a space that allows the exchange of information among artists and academics from around the world and multi disciplinary backgrounds.
Sewon ArtSpace launch with an art exhibition titled "To Know The Unknown' and will bring three artists from Austria and three artists from Indonesia to collaborate on an art project. They will experiment with words, color, shape time and space. When compared with the art of music, films or performances, cooperation in the visual arts is a rare and unusual. To increase the discomfort, the artists who work together do not know each other or know each other's work among them.
Indonesian artists:
Nurul 'Acil' Hayat, Arya Sukapura Putra, Baskoro Latu.
Austrian artists:
Karel Dudesek, Lukas Birk, Marbod Fritsch.
Acil's personal statement:
There is a difficulty in language. Not only in literal translation but in interpretations too for example in poetry. Out of this interpretation I materialize visual imagery. There is a lot of possibilities to translate these interpretations. They could be video, installation or a painting. Overall, I conclude it as drama in life.
Therefore I use 'gunungan' as representation for this drama. In which the begining and ending of a story appear in one object. I compare it with stories from different places in different visual shapes. The used language is 'gunungan' language.

This work is a translation of the first text. I tried to create a visual representation of random lines built by a thread in which there are a number of figures with an irregular position. The lines ended and returned to the construction of the area delimited by 'gunungan' (triangles). 'Gunungan' in the puppet is a symbol of life, as the beginning and the end of a drama of life. At the bottom put the mirror so that the viewer can be seen from all sides.
Finally, I interpret this work as a representation of the drama of life as most people want to interpret as a sign of something, for something special or specials. Then mark in his life. As a climber who draping his girlfriend's neck with edelweiss flowers.

I put my artwork as an equal experience to give meaning to a show. In the West, theater ends when the screen is closed. In Indonesia, the end of a puppet show is marked by the appearance of the 'gunungan' in the center of the screen. When the public returned to their homes, all bring the story that had just seen and membandingkanya with stories of life itself. The names of the figure of puppets is a reflection of the human character. And everyone is free to choose which characters to become an idol.

I consider my artwork as a form of communication between two people who have different backgrounds, I was as host and the artists from Austria as guest. We are very pleased to be involved in this art project time and the word 'welcome' on the doormat I think it can explain everything. Meanwhile, the painting is my property. Visual form of this painting I created specifically for this art project. There is an interesting thing to me when placing doormat as part of this work, to me the word 'welcome' on it show this nation so open to welcome guests from outside, why 'welcome' not written in Indonesian? Welcome has become an international language, from any country will understand the meaning of this word.
